The former home of the artist E A Hornell (one of the 'Glasgow Boys') overlooks the River Dee in the heart of Kirkcudbright. The 18th century pink limed building, with its mahogany panelled gallery and Hornell's studio both displaying many of Hornell's paintings, houses a wonderful collection of art, ceramics and furniture. To the rear of the building is the fascinating secret garden designed by Hornell and inspired by his visit to Japan. Garden only is open Mon-Fri from 1 Feb (see Open Gardens section for details)

Details: This is a fun event created by the local sailing club. The idea is that they pick a theme and dress up both sailors and boats to (very) loosely match the theme, then line up in the river, sail up past the harbour where spectators are lined up, turn at the bridge and head off back to the marina. The crowd pick the winning boat. A great family spectacle and fab fun. Local lifeboad usually in attendance too.
